Week 1 - 1 Samuel 5

1 Samuel 5

Philistines Smitten while Possessing the Ark

And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the ark of the LORD. So they took Dagon and put him back in his place. 1 Samuel 5:3 (ESV)
ASHDOD Part of the land of Judah, standing on the highroad between Egypt and Palestine, it was a strong hold of the Philistines and one of the chief places of worship of Dagon.

DAGON The national god of the Philistines, usually shown with the face and hands of a man and the tail of a fish, representing fruitfulness to the seafaring tribes.

Study

1. What was God showing to the Philistines? What was God teaching the Israelites?

2. The Philistines tried to get rid of the Yahweh by moving the ark. Did this work?

Application

1. How does God correct our behavior today?

2. What happens when we try to hide from God?

1 comment:

  1. 1. God was showing the Philistines that he was all powerful. that regardless of where they moved the ark calamity would follow. I do not see a direct reference to what he is teaching the Israelites.

    2. When the Ark was moved death and sickness followed. Moving it only furthered the destruction.

    Application

    1. i wish it was more obvious when i was being corrected by the Lord. For good and bad falls on the wicked and the righteous. Even my own personal conviction can be a device of the enemy rather than the prompting of the Lord. i would say the only time i am certain god has corrected my actions is when he has removed the desire for something by the washing of His word and worship. He has also shown me by letting me see poor fruit in my life and distance indifference to the Lord.

    2. We can't run from God nor have I tried. I have at times walked in a season of deliberate disobedience yet it was then the Father chased after me. Placing people in my life to draw me back to Him.
